With such a wide range and variety of pickleball paddles to choose from, finding what's right for you can be a daunting task. We've created this guide to help you navigate through the options, highlight the key considerations, and ensure you find the ideal pickleball paddle for you.
Experience Level
Experience level can help determine which style of paddles you should be browsing. If you're brand new to pickleball and have little to no experience with other racquet sports, we'll guide you towards beginner options. However, if you're an experienced player, or have played alot of other racquet sports (Tennis, Squash, Badminton, Table Tennis) you may appreciate a choice of more intermediate and advanced pickleball paddles. Use the chart below to identify which is most true to you:Pickelball Experience | Other Raquet Sports | Paddle Category |
---|---|---|
Just starting out | Little to none | Beginner | Some, but not lots | Beginner, Intermediate | Have played alot | Intermediate |
Played for a while | Little to none | Beginner, Intermediate | Some, but not lots | Intermediate | Have played alot | Intermediate, Advanced |
Played lots / Compete | Little to none | Intermediate, Advanced | Some, but not lots | Intermediate, Advanced | Have played alot | Advanced |
Pickleball Paddle Weight
Smaller players will benefit from an overall lighter pickleball paddle, whereas more powerful players may appreciate a heavier pickleball paddle. Weights are typically given in ounces (oz). The table below shows how we categorise pickleball paddle weights.Weight | Pickleball Paddle Category |
---|---|
7.6 ounces or less | Light |
7.7 - 8.2 ounces | Medium |
8.3 ounces or more | Heavy |
Grip Size
Grip size is given as the circumference of the grip and is given in inches (in/"). It's best to match the pickleball paddle's grip to your own hand size. If unsure, opt for the smaller size. The grip can always be built up with a thicker grip, or even double wrapped, but a grip that is too large can't be made smaller.
Hand Size | Grip Size |
---|---|
Small | 4 inches |
Medium | 4.25 inches |
Large | 4.5 inches |
Core Thickness
The thickness of the pickleball paddle is typically measured in millimeters (mm) and varies from paddle to paddle. Many pickleball paddles come in two or more choices of thickness. The thicker a pickleball paddle's core, the more it can absorb the sting of the ball, offering greater comfort and shot control. A thinner paddle allows you to generate greater power, but will be less forgiving in terms of shot control and vibrations.Thickness | Ideal For | Not as good for |
---|---|---|
16mm or more | Shot Control and comfort | Maximum shot power potential | 14mm or less | Power | Comfort, less shock absorption |
Material
Material | Benefits | Drawbacks |
---|---|---|
Carbon | Highly durable. Maximum shot power potential. | Premium pricetag. |
Fiberglass | Balance of durability, weight and spin control. | Less power potential than Carbon. |
Graphite | Lightweight. Soft feel and control. | Thin graphite surface is less durable. |
Wood | Tough and inexpensive. | Poor feel. Recreational use only. |
